| History of Chehalem Mountain German Shorthaired Pointers |

| Dean and Patti married in 1982, joining their separate families and animals and settling in Diamond Bar, California. While living in California they adopted their first GSP, “Tug,” from the Pomona Animal Shelter. Tug instantly fit in with the Goodding’s active family lifestyle---it was very evident that this was the perfect breed for them! In 1985, they bought a male GSP puppy “Thor” sired by one of John Merrill’s Danish imports and his half brother “Shadow,” followed by “Thea,” a female puppy. These dog’ s continued to reinforce Dean and Patti’s concept of a versatile sporting dog; able to jump in the truck for waterfowl in the morning and still ready for upland birds in the afternoon. Their great-grand offspring continue to play an important role in Chehalem Mountain’s breeding program. In 1987, Dean and Patti added a young GSP Dena Von Hainholz to their family of Shorthairs---they also added a life long friend in Daisy Schapheer, a native of Germany and founder of Von Hainholz Kennels. Daisy has bred many AKC Dual Champions and German KS imported GSP’s over the years, and remains a wonderful friend and mentor to the Gooddings. Clearly, European genetics have played a large part in the development of Chehalem Mountain Shorthaired Pointers. All of the dogs, both past and present, as well as the future generations will continue to reflect the Danish and German heritage of the foundation dogs. |
